College Football's Fleecing of American... →
Great writeup in the Dallas Observer on how bowl’s really work and why decision maker’s won’t change. And for college football programs, those losses are staggering. Last year, the nation’s bowls paid schools roughly $270 million. Just for playing middlemen and providing 70-degree temperatures, bowl execs grabbed a larger cut, north of $300 million. Even bowl apologists...

Woman of Mystery →
Unbelievable story of Whitney Walton a.k.a. Miranda Grosvenor and how she charmed powerful men for years over the phone, even getting them to fall in love with her without ever meeting her.  Give it a read and you’ll be drawn in as well. This was great journalism by the way.  It’s a shame it’s a dying art.

Researchers teach mans' cells to attack cancer
Dr. Carl June and his research team took a man’s T-cells and spliced in genes from the HIV virus.  The cells were dripped back into him so they could attack his cancer.  The result: At first, nothing happened. But after 10 days, hell broke loose in his hospital room. He began shaking with chills. His temperature shot up. His blood pressure shot down. He became so ill that doctors moved him...

When you run out of things to say, just reboot →
DC Comics started rebooting all of their comics this week, a bold move to say the least.  And while this renumbering is meant to offer fans a point at which to jump on the ride, for some it may be a place to jump off. “A certain part of the readership is put off by the nonpermanence of their comics. They know that a dramatic change — the hero getting married or killed, say — will be undone...

Colson Whitehead is doing a series for Grantland on his foray into the World Series of Poker as a rank neophyte.  But unlike his poker game, his writing is extremely professional.  Really insightful and great reading on the biggest sporting event played sitting down. I was gonna play in the Big Game and give it my best shot. It was not the National Series of Poker, it was the World Series of...

The Dark Knight Rises.  If this is as good as it probably will be, Christopher Nolan will have created a fantastic trilogy.  Maybe one of the best ever.

California gets greedy, Amazon responds
California gets greedy: Beginning Friday, a new state law will require large out-of-state retailers to collect sales taxes on purchases that their California customers make on the Internet — a prospect eased only slightly by a 1-percentage-point drop in the tax that also takes effect at the same time. Amazon responds: On Wednesday evening, Amazon terminated its associates program in...

FBI raids DigitalOne, steals servers and user's... →
The FBI raided a hosting service in the middle of the night looking for one company’s servers.  But instead of just grabbing the ones they had warrants for, they took 3 different enclosures containing the servers that were leased by other web companies such as Pinboard, Instapaper, the NY Times affiliate Curbed Network, and DigitalOne’s own website.  Pinboard was knocked offline and is...

Pottermore →
JK Rowling has a new site up shrouded in mystery.  My money is on either an immersive website or a world of Potter guide.  But it could be something else entirely.  I guess we’ll find out in a few short days. Update: It looks like it is all of the above.  Its an immersive website promising more content about the Potterverse from J.K. Rowling and a site for ebooks and audiobooks of the...

Father Forgets
A gem written by W. Livingston Larned and can be found in such inspirational books as Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People”.  It’s powerful and worth reading again. Listen, son: I am saying this as you lie asleep, one little paw crumpled under your cheek and the blond curls stickily wet on your damp forehead. I have stolen into your room alone. Just a...
