California gets greedy:
Beginning Friday, a new state law will require large out-of-state retailers to collect sales taxes on purchases that their California customers make on the Internet — a prospect eased only slightly by a 1-percentage-point drop in the tax that also takes effect at the same time.
Amazon responds:
On Wednesday evening, Amazon terminated its associates program in California after Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that will impose state sales taxes on online purchases made by California residents. Earlier that day, Amazon had sent an email to its California-based marketing affiliates warning it would shut down its associates program in the state if the bill was passed.
I’m sure this will really help a state with a $26.6 billion deficit and an 11.7% unemployment rate.
